Winter Quarter Update!

Welcome back!

SAJE is planning a number of events this quarter, and though we will send out weekly updates, consider this your quarterly bulletin!

Most importantly, you, as well as anyone who might find this interesting, is invited to an Open Meeting this Thursday at 7pm in the Newberger Hillel, 5715 S Woodlawn Avenue. We're going to discuss some of our upcoming programming, invite you to share your opinions on how the organization might move forward, and open up some positions on our executive board. Snacks will be served!

Our theme for the quarter is Law and the Jew, exploring the changing nature of halakha, Jewish law, and our evolving relationship to it. We look forward to many exciting programs along this line and to exploring this topic in depth.

-- Ezra Blaustein is back as our Scholar-in-Residence, and will be featured in a shabbaton this very weekend! He will be speaking twice in Hillel:
Friday, January 18, at 7:45pm, on
Redemption or Deception? "Borrowing" Wealth from the Egyptians before the Exodus, and
Saturday, January 19, at 3:00pm, on
And it Shall be as a Sign for You on Your Hand: When Halakhic Practice and Biblical Commentary Collide.
He will also be giving lectures on a semi-weekly basis, with the first:
Wednesday, January 23, at 6:00pm, on
Practice vs Belief: Halakha's Role in Judaism.
Dates and times for the rest of the lecture series are yet TBD.

-- In addition, we will be supplementing these with a number of student-led text-studies and chavruta sessions, following up on our events last quarter. Our first, led by Chana Messinger and Doni Bloomfield:
Wednesday, January 30, at 6:00pm
The Primacy of Halakha in Judaism vis-a-vis Yeshayahu Leibowitz
The remainder for the quarter are still in the works, but updates will come shortly.

-- SAJE is pleased to be cosponsoring the Makom Launch Party next week, featuring Ted Cohen moderating a student panel on the Jewish Aesthetic, on
Tuesday, January 22, at 5:30pm in Ryerson 358,
featuring refreshments.

-- As for some special events, SAJE is proud to continue our relationship with the Chicago Center for Jewish Studies this quarter. We will be cosponsoring Tel Aviv University's Eyal Chowers, on
Tuesday, February 5, at 5:30pm, followed by dinner with RSVP, in Classics 110
Violence and the Hebrew Language: Israel's Inner Struggles
And we are excited to continue our Judaism in Politics lecture series this quarter as well. Information about our guest speaker and topic will come shortly.

-- We are also really looking forward to celebrating our Annual Purim Party, Sunday, February 24. Details forthcoming.

-- As before, SAJE is also co-sponsoring UChicago's branch of Challah of Hunger, as well as other student initiatives as they arise. So feel free to contact the board with ideas for programming!

Can't wait to see you Thursday,
and looking forward to a great quarter,
Tova!
