P.S. The Center for Jewish Studies has asked us to pass along a description of their program as relates to undergraduates. I'm attaching it below, and it's certainly worth a read (cool stuff, guys, lots of it!), but the tl;dr is that they have lots of resources and also that they'd like you to e-mail Nancy Pardee, the center's administrator, at npardee@uchicago.edu so that they may add you to their mailing list.
To: All Undergraduates
From: Josef Stern, Director, Chicago Center for Jewish Studies
Re: Email
The Chicago Center for Jewish Studies is the home for academic Jewish Studies at the University of Chicago. We support, initiate, and publicize lectures, conferences, workshops, concerts, films, readings by visiting authors, and all sorts of other events related to the study of Judaism and the Jews, their literatures, languages, religion, thought, history, arts, and culture. All of our events are free and open to all students, undergraduates and graduates (as well as community members). (And all public receptions observe the dietary laws!) We welcome your suggestions for programs and events. For students in the College in particular, we
* Oversee the major and minor in Jewish Studies
* Oversee the two sequences in Judaic Civilization
* Support the publication of Makom, our undergraduate journal
* Support summer internships (administered through the Metcalf program) at, among other institutions (and more are in the planning), the Forward (newspaper), Spertus Museum and Library, the Holocaust Museum (Skokie), and an Oriental Institute dig in Israel.
* Oversee and administer two annual competitions for the best course essay and for the best BA essay on a topic related to the study of Judaism and the Jews, their literatures, languages, religion, thought, history, arts, and culture.
* Support a student conceived and organized lecture series on a topic related to Judaism and the Jews, their literatures, languages, religion, thought, history, arts, and culture. In 2012-13 the topic was Judaism and Politics; a topic for 2013-14 is in the planning.
We want to ensure that all of you know of our events and competitions. For that purpose, we ask that you send your name and email address to Nancy Pardee, administrator of the Center, at npardee@uchicago.edu and we will add it to our list.
Thanks and we look forward to seeing you at our events.
